COMMUNITY CHOICE ENERGY

Community Choice energy is coming to the Unincorporated Areas of San Diego county, and you will be automatically opted-in because the board majority from the County Board of Supervisors already decided for you.

In August 2021, by a vote of 3-2, the San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted to automatically enroll residents of the  Unincorporated Areas of the County into a community choice energy program as an alternative to SDGE. The cities of Imperial Beach, La Mesa, Encinitas, Chula Vista and San Diego have already made the switch and placed their residents into this program.

While 'community choice' energy is being lauded for its purported greener and cleaner energy sourcing, there are industry concerns that several other community choice power agencies throughout the state have either gone bankrupt or failed to deliver the savings they promised their customers.

The community choice entity for the Unincorporated Area will be San Diego Community Power, who will take over supplying power to these customers on April 1. You have the ability to opt out (which will keep you with SDGE for energy sourcing.) Whichever option you choose, SDGE will continue to deliver the energy, as well as handle billing and meter monitoring.
